The Three Shires fell race 2012
The Three Shires fell race (20km/1220m) starts from the Three Shires Inn in Little Langdale. This race is one of the six Lakeland Classic fell race series and has taken place for the past 29 years. At the 25th running of this race all the participants received a commemorative mug, so I suspect next year will see something similar. Elbra had three runners at this event: Scott Keough; Nick Ray and the Oldgadgy.
It was a good day for fellrunning; cool but not cold, with some sunshine and no rain. There were 236 finishers on the day and the Elbra lads all finished in the top 50. After a 2km undulating run out, there is an ascent of some 600m up Wetherlam, then descend before climbing ‘Prison Band’ and onto Swirl How and down to the Three Shires Stone (junction of the old county boundaries). Then it’s up Pike o Blisco and over to Blea Tarn. The last climb up Lingmoor Fell saw Nick leading Scott and the oldgadgy by 150 yard. Scott set to work on the climb and caught Nick by the top leaving the oldgadgy in his wake. Scott took the honours (44th/1-21-21) beating Nick to the finish(45th/1-21-27), but only by six seconds. The oldgad came in 2 minutes later (48th/1-23-15). Other than the race organiser, Selwyn, insulting the oldgadgy during the presentation by saying he ran for C-F-R, it was a good day. The beer in the Three Shires Inn wasn’t bad either.
