Scafell Pike Fell Race 2012
If you must have a short fell race on your running C.V. this has to be it! Scafell Pike; the biggest bump in England. The club was well represented at this event with seven runners taking part.
It was, in appearance, a lovely summer’s day; only the temperature gave a lie to this, as it was rather cool. Perfect conditions for running though! The race is basically up to the top and back the same way, though you never know what the configuration of the start and finish will be as this depends on the good will of the farmer who’s land you may need to cross. Unfortunately, he was not so obliging this year thereby making the race a good mile longer. This was reflected in the finishing times, making them about ten minutes slower overall.
The race was won easily by Martin Mickleson Barron of Borrowdale fell runners in 1-04-01. The first Ellenborough runner home was Richard MᶜGrath in 7th position (1-10-37) gaining him big brownie points in front of mam and dad, who had made the short journey from Gosforth to watch. Scott Keough continued his ascent of the pecking order by finishing in 19th (1-16-51) and beating the Oldgadgy by two minutes (again). Oldgadgy, 22nd (1-18-52. Nick (I’v got a cold) Ray was next in, 24th (1-21-03) followed by Andrew Turner in 32nd position with a time of 1-22-59, a big improvement on his ‘Cafod’ result. Maybe living down south isn’t turning him soft after all.
Peter Kemp turned up in an old Merc with his lovely wife and two adorable children and was determined to impress, nuff said. Peter finished a valiant 36th (1-23-35) with a smile on his face as usual. Now, there was someone else, oh yes, Sam (you’v been tangoed) Johnson running his first ‘proper’ fell race with the grown ups. Sam finished in 39th (1-25-46) out of 99 runners, so not bad! A work in progress. (old bull, young bull).
The day was finished off with a little social gathering at the Screes Inn in Nether Wasdale where we were reunited with several fell runners from other clubs who had the same (good) idea. You don’t get days like this on ‘the dark side’.
